Men and boys wearing white turbans dance and celebrate in a crowd in the Aitnar at Behdienkhlam which is the most important festival of the Jaintia Tribe (Pnar tribe) of Meghalaya. It is celebrated in mid-July every year after agricultural sowing is over. ("Khlam" means plague or pestilence and "beh dien" means to drive away with sticks). Ceremonies and rituals are carried out over a three day period culminating in a gathering at a huge water filled pool in Jowai called 'Aitnar' where men dance and parade around carrying tall, decorated structures called "Raths" and ceremonial tree trunks called "Khnongs".
