Kashmir Remains Tense After Execution of Separatist Leader
SRINAGAR, KASHMIR - FEBRUARY 17: (EDITORS NOTE: Image is a digital panoramic composite.) The Zabarvan Mountains are reflected on the waters of Barari Numbal Lagoon during a strike call given by separatists against the execution of alleged Indian parliament attacker Mohammad Afzal Guru on February 17, 2013 in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Administered Kashmir, India. Normal life remains affected in Indian-administered Kashmir for the ninth consecutive day as a complete shutdown was observed on the call of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Afzal Guru was hanged on February 9 for his alleged role in the 2001 Indian parliament attack which left 14 dead. Clashes between Kashmiri youth and Indian police were also reported in several parts of the disputed Himalayan region, which was put under a strict curfew for a week by Indian authorities worried about massive public protests following Guru's hanging last Saturday.
