Kashmiri Protests Over India's Proposal To Allow Pakistani Refugees To Settle In The Area

SRINAGAR, KASHMIR, INDIA - JANUARY 13: Activists of Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement, a resistance party, hold placards during a protest against India's proposal to allow Pakistani refugees from the west to settle in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir on January 13, 2015 in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, India. The Indian government's proposal to allow West Pakistani refugees who moved to the disputed region of Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir to settle permanently, in accordance with the 1947 Partition of India, has been opposed by the both pro India parties and anti-Indian resistance leaders from Kashmir. These leaders say that the move has the aim of changing the demography of the state and that they will resist this move to protect its identity. Last month the Indian parliamentary standing committee on home affairs gave the recommendation to grant a 'permanent resident' certificate to the refugees and to give them voting rights for the Assembly elections. The refugees have been demanding relief and rehabilitation from the government for the last 67 years. Indian Administered Jammu and Kashmir residents all hold permanent resident certificates that allow them the privilege to own property and to seek employment opportunities in local government.
