German Embassy Commemorates 25 Years Since GDR Refugee Exodus

In September of 1989 hundreds of East Germans, many of them in their Trabant-brand cars, arrived at the embassy and climbed over the fence in an attempt to be guaranteed passage to the West. Eventually East Germany agreed that over 4,000 of the refugees could board a train destined for West Germany that would pass through its territory. The incident was one of many that reflected the crumbling of power of communist governments across Eastern Europe and led to the revolutions that shortly thereafter swept them from office.
