Nagasaki Marks 150th Anniversary of the Hidden Christians in Japan

NAGASAKI, JAPAN - MARCH 16: Cardinal Orlando Quevedo (R) and archbishop of Nagasaki Mitsuaki Takami (L) attend a press conference ahead of the 150th anniversary of the Hidden Christians at Oura Cathedral on March 16, 2015 in Nagasaki, Japan. On March 17, 1865, a group of Kakure Kirishitan (hidden Christians) announced their faith to French priest Bernard Petitjean at the Oura Cathedral, also located in Nagasaki. Petitjean arrived in Japan in the early 1860s to serve as a priest in the French Quarter of the Oura district. The admission of faith at such a perilous time in Japan's history is known as Shinto Hakken, or discovery of followers. (Photo by The Asahi Shimbun via Getty Images)
