FRANCE-GERMANY-WWII-MEDITERRANEAN-PLANE-WRECK
A diver swims above the upside down wreck of a Messerschmitt BF 109 G model, a German WWII fighter aircraft, in the Mediterranean sea on August 21, 2014 near the Planier island, south of Marseille, southern France. The fighter, that was shot down in mission on March 7, 1944 a few months before the allied landings in Provence, lies in a depth of about 45 meters. Its pilot, Hans Fahrenberger, managed to survive by using his parachute as an air bubble that helped him resurface. The landing in Provence on August 15, 1944 was an airborne and seaborne operation, code-named Operation Dragoon, capturing the cities of Toulon, Marseille then Lyon upper north within weeks.
