The May 9-10 clashes in the northern Macedonian town of Kumanovo between police and ethnic Albanian gunmen, most of whom were from neighboring Kosovo, left 22 people dead, including eight police officers. The KLA is an ethnic Albanian guerilla group that fought for the independence of Kosovo in the 1990s. Macedonia labelled the gunmen killed in the northern town of Kumanovo "terrorists" and claimed they were planning to attack state institutions.
