FRANCE-ENVIRONNEMENT AGRICULTURE-PROTEST

A Gendarme patrols on March 4, 2015 in Lisle-sur-Tarn, southwestern France, on one of the roads leading to the site of a proposed dam in the Sivens forest occupied by some 40 Zadists the name given to the activists occupying the site "zone to defend," or ZAD to prevent other activists to enter the zone. Pro-dam farmers blocked since two days the two main roads leading to the site. The farmers argue that the dam will provide much-needed irrigation for their fields. Anti-dam say the proposed dam poses a huge environmental threat to the biodiverse Sivens wetland. Tarn department Council will have a meeting on March 6, 2015 focused on alternatives to the original dam project.
