Fred Marriott Stanley Steamer - Daytona 1906

DAYTONA BEACH, FL — January 1906: Fred Marriott of Needham, MA, at the wheel of the Stanley Rocket steam-powered car. On January 26, he set the world land speed record at 127.659 mph on Daytona Beach. He attempted to break his record at Daytona in 1907 using an improved version of the car, but hit a rut at an estimated speed between 140-150 mph and crashed. Marriott's mark for the steam land speed record became the longest-standing such record, and was finally broken more than 100 years later, in August 2009, when Charles Burnett III of the British "Inspiration" team recorded an average speed of 139.843 mph at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
