Syrian Man Seeking Refugee Status In Japan After Fleeing War-Torn Homeland Reunites With Family
NARITA, JAPAN - JANUARY 23: Joudi Youssef (C) embraces his son Biar (L) and daughter Narin (R) at the Narita International Airport on January 23, 2015 in Narita, Chiba, Japan. It was Youssef's first glimpse of the boy as he left Syria before his wife Farha, 29, gave birth. He last saw his wife two years and five months ago. Although the Japanese government is providing tens of millions of dollars in assistance to support Syrian refugees in the Middle East, it has yet to approve a single application for Syrian refugee status in Japan. Even in cases where Syrians are allowed to stay in Japan, like Youssef, from a humanitarian standpoint, bringing over family members presented a tremendous obstacle. Youssef was able to do just that after support organizations and lawmakers took up his case. They arrived in Japan through Turkey from a refugee camp located in a border area between Syria and Iraq.
