One Year Out, Rio Continues Preparations For The 2016 Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - JULY 25: Longtime resident and holdout Nelson Raimundo da Silva douses a garbage fire in the Vila Autodromo 'favela' community on July 25, 2015 in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Residents said they were burning garbage which wasn't being collected. Most community residents have moved out and had their properties demolished after receiving compensation for their properties which are located directly adjacent to the Olympic Park being built for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. A small fraction of remaining families from an original 700 or so are resisting the controversial evictions from the community and remain while experiencing random power and water outages. The 'favela' sprang from an old fishing village and was considered one of the city's safest. Evictions and demolitions continue in the area and have occurred in numerous other Rio communities with tangential links to the games. Much of the area in and around Olympic Park will be converted into high-end commercial properties following the games. August 5 marks the one-year mark to the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
