Heroin Use Impacts All Class Levels In Portland Maine Area

FALMOUTH, ME - JULY 2: A man walks his dog along the road to Mackworth Island in Falmouth, ME on July 2, 2015. The middle to upper-class suburb of Portland is not immune to heroin addiction which was once thought to be a drug for the lower class. Heroin use among Americans nationwide is skyrocketing as the price of the drug dropped to as low as $10 a hit. Cheap heroin is coming from the poppy fields in Mexico via the same routes established by the cartels for marijuana smuggling. The availability is widespread and users could range anywhere from the upper middle-class professional to soccer moms to college students. Many started on prescription pills like oxcodone and found themselves addicted. Once that was cut off, they found themselves in need of a black market opiate.
