A school cook winnows grain on May 20, 2014 as a teacher conducts a lesson at the Oloserian primary school in Kajiado county, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of the capital Nairobi where a lack of adequate facilities has seen classrooms turned partly into storage space. "Some children take their classes under a tree, while two other classes share one room, - making it extremely difficult to have total concentration from the pupils," according to head teacher Emmanuel Tenkes who adds wearily from his tin-shack office at the school without electricity, "the most pressing needs for us are the physical facilities". At Kajiado, children face the threat of lion and elephant attacks each day as they march up to 15 kilometres (nine miles) to get to school and basic facilities including books, desks, classrooms and even sanitary amenities are still lacking for potentially thousands of others in rural Kenya for whom the lofty dream of acquiring a laptop, now ensnared in corruption and scandal may never be realised.
