A US soldier sits behind a cement barrie

KARBALA, IRAQ: A US soldier sits behind a cement barrier as he mans his gun blocking the road leading to the US and Polish military camp just 2 kms from the southern holy city of Karbala following an attack 27 December 2003. At least four coalition soldiers and seven Iraqis were killed and at least 127 people wounded as insurgents terrorised the Shiite holy city of Karbala with four suicide car bombs, machine-gun fire and mortars. Two Iraqis lost their lives alongside the three Bulgarians and one Thai, military and hospital officials said, as insurgents targeted US allies just as the first Japanese troops arrived in Kuwait in readiness for a deployment to Iraq.
