Brazil Faces New Health Epidemic As Mosquito-Borne Zika Virus Spreads Rapidly

In the last four months, authorities have recorded thousands of cases in Brazil in which the mosquito-borne Zika virus may have led to microcephaly in infants. The most cases have been found in Pernambuco state, whose capital is Recife, and is being called the epicenter of the outbreak. Concerns have been raised by health officials that touristic events such as the upcoming Carnival in Recife, one of the most popular in Brazil, could aggravate the spread of the virus. The ailment results in an abnormally small head in newborns and is associated with various disorders including decreased brain development.
