The area called South Gare is a man-made area of reclaimed land and breakwater on the southern side of the mouth of the river Tees. Constructed from January 1861 to 1884, using 5 million tonnes of solid blast furnace slag and 18,000 tons of cement that were cast and moved into position along the banks of the river Tees it offers a safe haven from rough seas for fishing boats.
