Violence Climbs As Chicago 2012 Murder Rate Nears 500

CHICAGO, IL - DECEMBER 11: A memorial to sixteen-year-old Jeffrey Stewart sits at the base of a tree in the playground where he collapsed after being shot on December 9, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the city's West Side December 11, 2012 in Chicago, Illinois. Stewart was shot about a block away then ran to the playground. He was shot along with 17-year-old Anton Reed who survived with a gunshot wound to the hand. Reed was later arrested after vomiting three baggies of what appeared to be cocaine. On December 28, 2012, after news organizations began reporting about what was believed to be the 500th murder in Chicago this year, the Chicago Police Department's News Affairs Office issued a statement stating the city's murder total remains at 499 because classification of one death investigation remains pending. They would not specify which death is pending. The total number of murders in the city has only once exceeded 500 victims since 2004. The murder rate is up about 11 percent from 2011, much of which is attributed to growing gang violence. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)
