Barbary macaque, living free on the rock of Gibraltar (Gibraltar/ UK) - Fotografia de stock

The origin of the monkeys on Upper Rock (nature reserve on the rock of Gibraltar) is not exactly clarified. Probably they were imported from Morocco by humans during the siege of Gibraltar from 1779 to 1783. At that time the English military were warned by the animals before a night attack by the Spaniards and the French starts. Legend is also that that the British rule in Gibraltar was over as soon as the last monkey had left the rock. Today, a population of ~200 monkeys live free on Upper Rock as a tourist attraction.
