Loxophyllum ciliate protozoa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the predatory protozoan Loxophyllum. These single-celled organism are ciliates, being covered in hair-like structures known as cilia. They live in freshwater environments. They feed on other ciliates and rotifers. The membranelles, rows of fused cilia are used for catching prey as well as locomotion. Magnification: x 2000 when printed at 10cm wide.
