Lying in a sheltered position on the gulf of the same name on Corsica's mountainous west coast, Ajaccio is the island's capital and largest city. It is notable for being the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, later to become Emperor Napoleon I of France. Ajaccio's marina and fishing port are named after the Corsican singer and actor Tino Rossi, another of the city's native sons.
