University of Texas backfield defense man Fred Steinmark

Doctors have removed the cancerous left leg of Fred Steinmark, the University of Texas backfield defenseman and punt return specialist who played every defensive down only six days ago as Texas, the nation's number one team, defeated the University of Arkansas. Steinmark, 20, complained of leg pains early this week and x-rays showed a fast spreading type of tumor. A hospital spokesman said Steinmark, of Denver, Colorado, was in good spirits as the operation began December 12th. Steinmark is shown in action December 6th. Steinmark (28) faces Arkansas' John Rees.
