44th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution

LISBON, PORTUGAL - APRIL 25: Former Greek Finance Minister and co-founder of DiEM25 Yanis Varoufakis poses for selfies with supporters before walking through Avenida da Liberdade with members of Portuguese political party "Livre" during the parade to celebrate the 44th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal. The Democracy in Europe Movement 2025, or DiEM25, is a Pan-European political movement launched in 2015 by former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and Croatian philosopher Srecko Horvat. Thousands of Lisbon citizens took to the streets to celebrate the 44th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, when the Armed Forces rebelled and overthrew the regime of the Estado Novo. The revolution started as a military coup organized by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) composed of military officers who opposed the regime, but the movement was soon coupled with an unanticipated and popular campaign of civil resistance. This movement led to the fall of the dictatorship and the withdrawal of Portugal from its African colonies and East Timor. (Photo by Horacio Villalobos/Corbis via Getty Images)
