Jack Roosevelt Robinson Signing Contract for Royals

(Original Caption) Jack Roosevelt Robinson, the first Negro to win a contract in organized baseball, is shown signing for the Montreal Royals of the International League, farm club of Brooklyn Dodgers at the Royals' office in Montreal. Looking on are (l to r), Hector Racine, President of the Royals; Branch Rickey Jr., President of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and J. Romeo Gauvreau, Vice President of the Royals. Robinson, ex star of the University of California at Los Angeles, was a football star, before he became a shortstop. He was discharged from the Army where he had advanced to the rank of Second Lieutenant. He hit .340 in 100 games with the Kansas City monarchs of the American League, (Negro), thus drawing the attention of Dodger scouts.
