The town of Berchules, located in Granada, on the southern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, has had a curious New Year's Eve tradition in place since 1994. The town experienced a power outage on New Year's eve in 1994 and residents were unable to hold the traditional celebrations, so they decided to move their celebrations to the mid-point of the year, holding them in August instead.
