Council Of Ministers Extraordinary Meeting.

LISBON, PORTUGAL - SEPTEMBER 17: Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro walks out of his office to receive Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who presides over a Council of Minister extraordinary meeting, called by Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, at Sao Bento PM official residency on September 17, 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has called on the Council of Ministers to meet in an extraordinary session to analyze the whole situation regarding the fires and their consequences. The meeting was chaired by the President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa after having accepted the Prime Minister's invitation. Several rural fires have broken out in mainland Portugal, especially in the north, over the last few days. On September 16 the situation became more complicated, especially in the Aveiro region. The “need to adopt preventive and special measures” has led the government to extend the alert situation - which was in force until September 17 - for another 48 hours, until 11.59pm on September 19. According to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), seven people have already died and more than 40 have been injured as a result of the fires.
