Nun Leads Children to School

(Original Caption) School children led by a demure nun to school in Barcelona. Barcelona: city in ferment. After twelve years of Franco, of growing poverty and frustration, the city of Barcelona rose for one day in a general strike. This strike was not political in the sense that it was developed by any kind of anti-Franco movement - the strikers were labourers, artisans, Catholic Youth, radicals, Falangists, even some of the big employers, and they struck not against Franco but against the vicious corruption that forms his administration, and against the notorious black market that is slowly starving Spain. Not one demonstrator was armed. The shots came from the soldiers - into mobs who cried in desperate paradox, "Viva Franco!"
