Gloria Funicular Attracts Tourism All Year Around

Gloria Funicular (Elevador da Glória) connects the Baja (Restauradores Square) to the Barrio Alto (St. Peter of Alcantara Garden) neighborhoods. It is the most used funicular in the city, transporting more than 3 million passengers annually. The funicular, built by the Portuguese engineer Raul Mesnier, was inaugurated on October 24, 1885, becoming the second of its kind in the city through the initiative of the New Company of Mechanical Elevators of Lisbon. Original traction system was rack and pinion and water counterbalanced line, later on steam powered, and since September 1915, electrically powered.
