Government Branch Demands Demonstrators' Tents Removed

OKINAWA, JAPAN - FEB. 19: The local office of the Ministry of Land and Transport demanded tents near a U.S. military base set up by demonstrators who are against the construction of a new offshore airstrip nearby for the U.S. by reclaiming the sea. The road construction office in Nago asked the sitters-in to leave by February 26 claiming they had not applied permission for the tents which are apparently occupying parts of national properties used for roads. The campaigners, who are watching the activities of construction companies in front of the gate of Camp Schwab, did not agree. The planned site for the new airstrip is just off the coasts close to this U.S. base and the sitters-in are opposing the reclamation as the works could destroy precious ocean ecosystem including dugong.
