CYPRUS-TURKEY-VOTE

A Turkish citizen casts her vote for Ankara's presidential elections on August 1, 2014 at a school, turned polling station in the Turkish-controlled north of the Cypriot capital Nicosia. Turkey's August 10 election, in which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking to become head of state, marks the first time the Turkish president will be chosen by popular vote, and the first time poll booths have been set up abroad. The northern third of Cyprus has been under Turkish occupation since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded the predominantly Greek Cypriot island to protect the Turkish-Cypriot minority following an Athens-engineered military coup to unite the east Mediterranean island with Greece.
