Owen Lattimore

Flanked by his wife and son, David, 19, Owen Lattimore whom Senator McCarthy charged with being a Soviet agent, is shown lashing back at his accused before a group of newsmen shortly after he disembarked at Idlewild Airport from a British overseas airliner. Lattimore, a one-time state department consultant and Fat Eastern specialist, rushed home from U.N. mission to Afghanistan to deny his alleged Red connections, flatly asserting that he is not a communist nor a fellow traveller nor was he ever one, Lattimore branded the Wisconsin Republican as "A base and miserable creature."
