The performance was part of the Great Lakes Exposition, also known as the World Fair of 1936, which was held in Cleveland, Ohio in the summers of 1936 and 1937. The exposition was planned to coincide with the centennial of Cleveland's incorporation and to help the city recover from the Great Depression. He set world records alongside winning five gold medals in the Olympics.
