Mt. Gassan (1,984 m) is a volcano in the central part of Yamagata Prefecture; It is a prominent center for mountain worship, attracting ascetics from ancient times; Together with Mt. Yudono and Mt. Haguro, it compromises the so-called "three sacred mountains of the Dewa region", drawing large numbers of pilgrims.
